How blackboard chalk is made
Much classroom chalk is not chalk at all. Gypsum is the cheaper ingredient, and chalk rock is made of ancient plankton shells.

The short version
Most blackboard sticks are cast from gypsum powder, like plaster. Workers oil the holes of a mold plate, and a stirrer whips water, gypsum and any pigment into a slurry for a few seconds. The slurry floods the holes and is scraped level. Once the sticks set slightly firm, the plate pushes them up out of the mold, and they dry at low heat before boxing.
-
Quarry and grind gypsum
Gypsum or limestone is dug and ground to a fine powder, which reaches the chalk plant ready to measure.
Goes in -
Oil the mold plate
A wide brush spreads release oil inside the mold holes, more generously on new molds. The plate cycles up and down so its ejector screws seat properly.
-
Whip the slurry
Water goes into the bucket first, then the measured gypsum and any color powder. A high-speed stirrer runs 10 to 20 seconds until the slurry is smooth.
-
Pour and scrape level
A discharge switch lets the slurry flow into every hole, up to 800 on a large plate. A plastic scraper levels the tops so each base comes out flat.
-
Eject the sticks
Once the sticks feel slightly firm, the plate lifts them 2 to 5 mm, waits a minute or two, then pushes them out completely.
-
Dry and box
Sticks cure in the sun or an oven held at no more than 55 °C, then go into boxes.
Worth repeating
- Chalk rock is made of calcite plates only 0.5 to 4 microns across, which are fragments of plankton shells.
- The Cretaceous Period gets its name from creta, the Latin word for chalk.
- Carbonate chalk makes larger particles than gypsum chalk, so it is marketed as dustless.
