How video game consoles are made
A console is a small, sealed computer where one chip does the thinking and the drawing, and a fan keeps it cool.

The short version
A video game console is built around a single system-on-a-chip that combines the processor and the graphics unit. Machines solder the chip, memory and connectors to a circuit board. A heat sink and fan are fitted over the hot chip, the board goes into a molded plastic shell, and the console is tested with a game.
-
Fabricate the main chip
Billions of transistors are patterned onto a silicon wafer by repeated rounds of light exposure and etching. The wafer is cut into individual chips, each one a processor and graphics unit on a single piece of silicon.

Populate the board
Machines place the chip, memory, storage and power parts on a multilayer circuit board, and an oven melts the solder to join them all at once.
-
Mold the shell
Plastic pellets are melted and injected into steel molds that form the top and bottom of the case. Vents are molded in so air can pass through.
Goes in -
Fit the cooling system
A metal heat sink with a copper heat pipe is pressed on the main chip with a layer of thermal paste. A fan draws air across the metal fins and out of the vents.
Goes in -
Close up and connect
The board and a power supply are screwed into the shell, and ports are wired to the back panel. Some consoles also fit an optical disc drive with a laser.

Test with a game
Each console is run through a test program that exercises the chip, memory, ports and fan. Controllers are paired and checked before the unit is boxed.
Worth repeating
- The Nintendo Switch popularized the hybrid console, with detachable controllers that dock into a screen.
- Makers often sell consoles at low prices, sometimes at a loss, and earn their profit from licensing fees on each game.
