The short version

Shampoo is a big batch of water blended with detergents that lift oil from hair, plus a second foaming agent, thickeners, conditioners, perfume and preservatives. The main detergent is usually made from coconut oil. Operators add the ingredients to a stirred tank in a set order, check thickness and acidity, then pump the finished liquid into bottles.

  1. Make the fatty alcohol

Oils from coconut or palm are turned into fatty alcohols, the oily backbone of the main cleaning ingredient.

  2. Ethoxylate the alcohol

Part of the batch is reacted with ethylene oxide, a product of ethylene, to make a gentler form that foams well and softens water.

    Goes in
  3. Sulfate and neutralize

The alcohols are treated so they carry a sulfate group and then neutralized, giving a detergent that traps oil and dirt. Sodium laureth sulfate is the usual result.

  4. Fill the mixing tank

Purified water goes into a large stirred tank first. The detergent and a second foaming agent are added next, then warmed together until the mixture is clear.

    Goes in
  5. Thicken with salt

Table salt is stirred in to thicken the liquid. A small amount at a time is added because too much makes the mixture thin out again.

    Goes in
  6. Add conditioners and scent

Silicone, polymers that smooth hair, perfume, dye and preservatives are blended in at gentle speed, since fast stirring whips in air bubbles.

  7. Test and adjust

Lab staff take a sample to check thickness, acidity and clarity. Small additions of acid or salt bring the batch back to the target.

  8. Fill the bottles

Pumps fill rows of bottles at high speed. Caps are screwed on, and labels are applied and checked before cartons are packed.

Worth repeating

  • The word shampoo entered English in 1762 from the Hindi word for pressing, kneading or soothing, which named a head massage with hair oil.
  • In 1900, German perfumer Josef Wilhelm Rausch developed the first liquid hair washing soap and named it Champooing.
