How treadmills are made
Long before gyms, treadmills ground grain in prisons, and the first home model was inspired by a book on running.

The short version
Treadmill makers combine metalwork, injection molding, electronics assembly and final debugging. Steel is welded or bent into a frame, a wood-fiber deck with a slick surface is pressed, and a belt is stretched over it between two shafts. A motor drives the front shaft, and the machine is measured for load, speed control and emergency stop response before it ships.
-
Sample the incoming parts
Motors, running decks and bonded surface layers are sampled when they arrive, with records and labels that trace each batch. A treadmill maker's factory guide treats this as the first gate against bad parts.
-
Weld the frame
Steel sections are welded or bent into a rigid frame. Inspectors look for even seams, no false welds and bend angles that match the drawing. At Dyaco's complex in central Taiwan, robots process components with little human help.
Goes in -
Press the running deck
The deck under the belt is built from hardboard. Wood is ground into fine particles, mixed with wax and resin, and pressed into a flat sheet. Plywood may sit beneath for strength.
Goes in -
Finish the deck surface
The deck is machined for flatness and surface pattern. Wax in the hardboard, or a polymer coating on top, lets the belt slide. Any bonded layer gets random checks for thickness and adhesion.
-
Stretch the belt between shafts
A shaft sits before the deck and another behind it. The belt is a loop stretched between the shafts, with the deck holding up the top surface where the runner lands.
Goes in -
Mount the drive motor
An electric motor connects to the front shaft, so the top of the belt travels backward. Inspectors check that its wiring is orderly and its mounts are firm. Treadmills with an incline add a lifting element that raises the whole frame.
Goes in -
Wire the control system
The control electronics and console go in. Circuits should be laid out neatly and connectors seated reliably.
Goes in -
Run the final tests
The assembled machine gets a first functional test. Testers measure motor performance, deck fatigue, insulation and noise, and maximum load, speed accuracy and emergency stop response should be recorded before shipping. Safety standards for treadmills are written into IEC EN 957.
Worth repeating
- English engineer William Cubitt introduced the first treadmills for punishment in 1818, putting idle prisoners to work grinding grain.
- The forerunner of the exercise treadmill was built to diagnose heart and lung disease, at the University of Washington in 1952.
- William Staub built the first home treadmill after reading a 1968 book that said running eight minutes four to five times a week improves fitness.
