The short version
Flour-based modeling compound starts as a dry blend. One patent premixes dyes with a little acid, tumbles that with salt, flour and talc in a conical mixer, then pours in oil. Adding water and heat swells the flour's starch into a dough. The dough is kneaded smooth and scented, then sealed away from the air so it stays soft.
-
Premix dye and acid
One patent stirs its dyes into tartaric acid first, because that premix spreads the color evenly through the much bigger batch to come.
-
Blend the dry powders
Salt goes into a conical auger mixer, followed slowly by the premix, flour and sterilized talc. Mixing runs about five minutes. Flour is the binder that gives the compound its body.

Pour in the oil
Oil trickles in as the mixer turns, for about five more minutes, until evenly spread. It coats the flour particles and later reduces stickiness.
Goes in -
Work in hot water
Water and heat gelatinize the flour, swelling the starch granules until the mixture thickens into a dough. Done right, this avoids a sticky paste that would be messy to handle.
Goes in -
Knead it smooth
The batch is worked until it is uniform, soft and cohesive. A lubricant in the recipe gives it a smooth feel.
-
Add the scent
Fragrance is mixed in. One brand's trademarked scent mixes a sweet, vanilla-like note with the smell of a salted, wheat-based dough.
-
Seal it from the air
Finished compound is pressed into tubs and sealed so the water stays in. Random samples from the packing line get a pH check.
Worth repeating
- Play-Doh began in the 1930s as a putty to clean coal soot from wallpaper.
- Declining coal heat and the arrival of washable vinyl wallpaper shrank the market for the cleaner, and the maker turned to schoolchildren.
- The Play-Doh Fun Factory press that squeezes the dough into shapes was invented in 1960.
